The pandemic may still be present, but travel is making a strong comeback.
We've been plotting our next wanderlust destinations while binge-watching our favorite shows and working from home. Simultaneously, travel and technology companies have been rapidly evolving with the times to develop technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), biometrics, and remote work solutions to enhance or improve the travel experience. That means 2023 will be a big year for travel. Here are some of the top travel technology trends we anticipate in 2023.
1. Airports are getting a technological upgrade.
Expect to see a lot more technology designed to make airport travel more convenient. New technologies are stepping in to address the headaches that come with flying, from the moment you leave your house to baggage claim. Clear now provides a free online tool called Reserve that allows you to reserve your spot in the security line ahead of time. Clear, of course, hopes you'll sign up for its paid membership, which includes identity verification and expedited security via biometrics (eye or fingerprint scanning).
The Transportation Security Administration's biometrics pilot program is being expanded. TSA is testing facial recognition technology for identity verification in 16 airports, with plans to expand the program to more airports in the "coming months."
According to Amadeus' 2023 travel trend report, once you've passed through security, your face and hands will be put to use a lot more for purchasing snacks and magazines. ApplePay and GooglePay already allow payments to be made using facial recognition technology. However, this year, Hudson, your favorite airport store, partnered with Amazon to begin testing its "Just Walk Out" technology, which accepts payment via palm recognition.
Once you arrive at your destination, companies such as Boomerang, SITA, and Roadie will assist you in tracking, recovering, and delivering your misplaced luggage.
We're all for a stress-free flight, but the use of biometric data and personal item tracking poses privacy concerns. False biometric identification (which is more common among people of color, trans and nonbinary people, and people of color) and data breaches are important considerations. Furthermore, the TSA biometric pilot is currently voluntary, but programs like this frequently become the norm. "We frequently see with these biometric programs that they are only optional in the beginning — and over time we see them becoming standardized, nationalized, and eventually compulsory," privacy advocate Albert Fox Cahn told the Washington Post.
Finally, knowing what you're getting into — and giving up — for a slightly faster experience is critical.
2. Airbnb maintains its dominance
Airbnb turned lemons into lemonade in 2022. First, it finally put an end to the saga of the unexpected cleaning fees that aren't added on until checkout. When you search for an Airbnb, you can now see the total amount you would pay, including the cleaning fee. Airbnb also had the final say on the growing trend of hosts requesting excessive cleanings: "When leaving their Airbnb, guests should not be required to perform unreasonable checkout tasks such as stripping the beds, doing the laundry, or vacuuming. However, we believe it is reasonable to request that guests turn off the lights, throw food in the trash, and lock the doors, just as they would when leaving their own home."
Second, it finally addressed the issue of landlords who prohibited tenants from Airbnbing their apartments. This was previously an untapped market for Airbnb, but it turns out that including landlords in the deal goes a long way. Airbnb has now created the "Airbnb-friendly apartments" program in collaboration with property management companies across the country. Renters can use the website to look for apartments that allow Airbnb rentals and calculate how much they could earn as a host after Airbnb and the landlord take their cut of the profits. It's a clever way to help people offset the skyrocketing cost of rent that Airbnb has contributed to in the first place.
Whether you like it or not, Airbnb is accelerating in 2023. The short-term booking platform is expected to be as popular as ever, thanks to more transparent pricing and more potential Airbnb hosts. Furthermore, with travel and real estate prices on the rise, it's a win-win situation for Airbnb.
3. Our favorite streaming shows motivate us to get up from the couch
Despite all the scamming and murders, you're not alone if you found yourself wanting to book a trip to Sicily while watching Season 2 of The White Lotus. Since the second season premiered, travel-related searches for the Italian island have skyrocketed. This phenomenon, however, is not limited to The White Lotus. According to Expedia's 2023 travel trends report, 68 percent of US travelers wanted to visit a destination after seeing it in a streamed show or movie, and 61 percent booked a trip as a result.
According to Expedia, the trending destinations in search and flight demand in 2022 were Paris (Emily in Paris), the United Kingdom (Bridgerton and The Crown), New Zealand (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power), and both Hawaii and Italy (thanks to the aforementioned The White Lotus, with an assist from Searching for Italy).
Sure, these are the most popular travel destinations, but the report also states that streamed TV shows and movies are now the most popular sources of travel inspiration, so it's hardly a coincidence.
4. Digital nomads have officially entered the mainstream.
Digital nomads have existed for some time, but the increase in remote work during the pandemic has catapulted this lifestyle into the mainstream. According to research, hybrid and remote employees have a better work-life balance and are more productive, which has prompted more companies to implement these policies.
Many workers are taking advantage of the digital nomad lifestyle now that they are no longer location-dependent. And the trend of remote work is expected to continue. According to Upwork, 36.2 million Americans will work remotely by 2025, more than doubling the pre-pandemic figure (16.8 million). Indeed, Nomad List, a digital nomad membership platform, predicts that by 2035, one billion people will be working remotely at least part of the year. The platform had over 4,000,000 users last year.
Initially, digital nomadism was thought to be only for privileged, twenty-something dreamers. "You not only need a relatively powerful passport that makes obtaining tourist visas simple, but also a knowledge economy job and access to the technology and devices that allow remote working," The Guardian declared in 2015. However, broadband continued to improve globally, flights became more affordable, countries began to offer remote work-friendly visas, and there was enough critical mass for digital nomad hubs and co-working spaces to emerge.
According to Nomad List statistics, today's digital nomads are 44 percent women, 40 percent non-white, an average of 33 years old, and work in a variety of fields such as marketing, UI/UX design, product management, and, yes, software development.
To put it simply, being a digital nomad has never been easier.
5. Virtual and augmented reality improves in-person travel
The pandemic halted travel and tourism, forcing businesses to get creative with virtual and augmented reality. "Coming out the other side, the same absorbing technology will be used to enhance rather than replicate the visitor experience," said Euronews in its 2023 travel report.
VR/AR was quickly adopted to provide the virtual travel experience that sheltered-in-place consumers desired. You could visit museums and explore sites such as Machu Picchu without leaving your house. And it's now being used to help travelers research their next vacation destinations, as a way to "try before you buy" when selecting hotels and tours, and even to book them. Expect to see more travel and tourism companies offering VR tours as VR/AR becomes more mainstream, thanks to Meta's Quest lineup and Sony's PlayStation 5 (and possibly soon Apple?) offering consumer-friendly VR headsets.
Virtual tours of hotel rooms are available from Marriott, Shangri-La, and Holiday Inn, and companies such as Beeyonder and Weezy have emerged to provide immersive virtual travel experiences. Finally, virtual reality and augmented reality for travel are being integrated into every stage of the customer journey. Expect VR/AR to cross your path whether you're at home or visiting the real thing.
6. Reconnecting with nature in novel ways (beekeeping!)
You're not alone if you're tired of hearing about technology. People want to unplug and recharge — but without their electronic devices. It's no surprise that travelers are prioritizing wellness in recent years. But they aren't just looking for a day at the spa. According to Hotels.com (owned by Expedia), 53% of US travelers looking for wellness activities want something exciting and novel. "The same old yoga retreat is on its way out in this town. People are looking for a "new wave of wellness," as we call it "Melanie Fish, Expedia Group Brands' Head of Global PR, stated this at Expedia's event revealing its 2023 travel trends.
Expect to see more hotels and tours offering activities like forest bathing (also known as sylvotherapy), foraging, fruit harvesting, and even beekeeping if you're looking for a wellness getaway. Alternative wellness resorts are springing up all over the world. The United States appears to be the most popular destination for millennials, but Gen Z appears to be more adventurous, preferring Norway, Turkey, Switzerland, Iceland, and Sri Lanka.
Whether you're a digital nomad who has made travel a way of life or a regular traveler getting back into the swing of things after a break, these tech trends will be hard at work behind the scenes wherever you are.
